Looking at Different Desk Types

There are many different types of desks, all of which serve a particular purpose, whether they are used predominately for writing purposes, computer purposes or both.

Computer workstations usually consist of relatively small desks that contain two shelves, one to support the monitor and one that slides in and out to hold the keyboard and mouse.

A flat workstation is generally used for paperwork rather than computer work. It has a level surface making it convenient for writing and reading. The surface of the desk is usually large so that the desk can hold stacks of books, papers and other important items.

A work station in which a desk, chair, keyboard tray and monitor support are all attached is known as an integrated work system.

A recessed monitor desk is one that has a monitor support under the work surface and a cut-out portion of glass or plastic that lets the user look through his or her work surface to view the monitor. These desks are often used by bankers and other workers who work at their desks and also meet with customers or clients. It may be necessary to remove the monitor from the surface so that the worker can increase his or her desk space to have a clear view when meeting with his or her customers or clients.

There are also desks with flat surfaces that can be adjusted for height in certain increments. This may be accomplished either manually or electronically.

Another type of desk is the sit-stand work station in which the height of a work surface can be adjustable. The monitor and keyboard/mouse tray are also adjustable. This enables the worker to work when sitting or standing. The main purpose of these types of stations is to enable workers to accomplish most of their tasks while sitting, but when the need arises, they may also stand, such as when a worker may need to assist a customer.
