Comfort of Ergonomic Desks

Desk designs have changed dramatically since computers became the norm in offices. These changes in desks are still evolving to become more ergonomically correct in order to prevent injuries to the user and to make him or her more comfortable, especially while using the computer.

The regulations that OSHA has implemented have been instrumental in changing many of the designs seen in desks today.

An ergonomically correct keyboard tray is crucial for the comfort of the user and to prevent injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome, as well as neck, shoulder and back pain. The keyboard shelf, or tray, should have the capability of being raised or lowered to accommodate the user, so that his or her arms can be kept parallel to the floor. A tilting adjustment on the keyboard of up to 20 degrees will help decrease strain on the wrists.

Another feature that each desk should be equipped with is a built-in copy holder. This item will help prevent neck and shoulder pain due to the constant bending in order to see the paper from where you are sitting. This copy holder should be strong enough to hold a heavy book with a spring loaded clip that can grip the document or pages of a book to keep it in place. An adjustment feature to allow for various heights should also be a feature in order to maintain the proper eye level.

Since laptops/notebooks are becoming increasingly popular for day-to-day work, a computer desk must also be able to ergonomically accommodate those items. The small size of a notebook is not favorable to an ordinary computer desk and can, therefore, create neck or back strain on the user. An actual laptop desk has a work area that can be adjusted to 45 degrees in either direction and is able to accommodate the weight of a laptop computer.
