About Wooden Desks
Wood desks will add beauty to the office environment. Wood desks have been in existence for years. There are three types of woods that are most often used in the construction of desks: hardwoods, softwoods and composite woods. Hardwoods are determined by the tree which produces the wood. This will explain, in part, why even balsa (a very lightweight wood) is considered a hardwood. Hardwoods also include oak, maple, cherry, walnut and mahogany. These woods are the highest quality and, thus furniture made from this wood will be the most expensive. Softwoods come from trees that tend to be green year-round such as pine. Composite woods are those woods that are made, not grown, and are the least expensive woods. There are four principal types of composite board used in manufacturing furniture. These include plywood, particle board and hardboard.
These desks are timeless and classic in their appeal. There are many different types of wood that can complement the decor or your home or office whether it is elaborate or simple.
Many office desks are constructed of oak which is a strong and durable wood. Oak wood material consists of many different types of wood including solid oak, cherry, walnut, maple or pine. Since these woods range from dark to light, you will be able to find one (or more) that will fit in nicely with your decor. For example, if you want a rich dark wood, cherry would be a nice choice. For a lighter or more rustic look, you may prefer a pine desk.
The finish on oak desks often has a red or brown tone to them. They can also be decorated with paint or carvings. You will be able to find all different types of desks, whether computer, executive, student, or something else, in classic appealing styles. The styles include modular, roll-top, corner, etc. and various shapes and sizes as well.
Wood desks do have some disadvantages. They have a tendency to scar easily and they must be consistently maintained to preserve their appearance. Wood desks will often contain a laminate, which is a plastic finish, that is applied to a wood core.
In order to determine if a wood desk is high quality, you may examine the drawers. The drawers should be put together with an interlocking dovetail arrangement. Cheaper wood desks will be assembled merely by using staples or glue. It is important that the drawers also be made with a wood veneer or heavy plywood instead of using sheeting that is composed of plastic melamine.
In spite of their disadvantages, a good quality wood desk is still the most durable and long-lasting of all desk materials; and wood desks are certainly the most beautiful.
